This video shows sjoelen, a highly social game from the Netherlands, was born from the harmonious family unit, once the cornerstone of Dutch society.

Sjoelen incorporates sober design and economical use of materials reflecting an integral part of Dutch manufacturing culture that is still true today.

Production

This video wouldn't have been made if it wasn't for Willem Wolzak, who instigated retrieving a sjoelen board from his commune's attic. Willem was very enthusiastic about getting us all to play the game that evening and record the activity for posterity. I really had no idea how to make a video, which probably shows, but it was the taking part and the fun had by all that counted. Thanks to Willem my quest had got off to a great start.

Willem Approves

Not only did Willem bring us all together, but he played a rendition of one of his songs "I'm here and not there", putting in a personal dedication to me, knowing that I'd use it for the video. An all round great memory.

This first video was all of 60mins footage, inclusive of postcard shots in Amsterdam and my intro with rooster. I later edited it in Berlin, and added a series intro shot with friends in Tuscany. I uploaded the final transcoded version onto my website a couple of months later just before Christmas whilst in Greve In Chianti.

This is somewhat a testament to Avid's video editing NLE software, that made it possible to edit video on the move in 2003.
